Magic Of Mulch

Mulch is awesome. I know, what? But for serious. It really helps the garden in so many ways. Last time I spread fresh mulch was in early fall. I wanted to keep the ground insulated for winter. But winter was a bust this year.  I think Savannah had maybe 5 days that may be called ‘Hard Frost,’  most of this winter was 50’s-70’s. It was nice, I wont lie! I also think the warmer than normal winter caused the mulch to break down much faster than a cooler winter would. I had dirt and weeds showing up all over. Time for a trip to the hardware store. I needed to go anyways to try to find a replacement for my sweet dogwood. Didn’t find any. Bummers. So I just replaced the dead ‘Stellar Pink’ with a white dogwood I had on the side of the yard.

Dirt and weeds showing up where the mulch has broken down.

I know, it don’t look that bad, But I have been pulling weeds everyday for the last week.

This is a great way to work with kids in the garden too. My son was having a blast throwing mulch out. But ditched me as soon as he realized Daddy was washing the car.

 Such a happy little man!

If you have never done this before, it’s as easy as it gets!

1. Pull all weeds.

2. removed old mulch (I leave mine, it breaks down fast)

3. Spread it evenly

4. Smooth out, pull away from plant trunks

5. Water.

I used 8 bags at 2.00 each. Was able to fill in my flowerbeds for 19.00$

Not only will a good layer of mulch look fresh and clean, it will insulate your plants roots & save you water in the summer! Mulch also keeps weeds away. Remember to keep it about 2-3 inches deep, and about 2-3 inches away from tree trunks, plant trunks/stems. If you pack up mulch up onto the stems you are helping bugs destroy your plants. This will also kill your plants by smothering them.

DONT MAKE MULCH VOLCANOES AROUND PLANTS!!!

See the difference from the old mulch to the new fresh mulch?

So much better looking now!

Water the mulch down after you lay it out!  Then you are done!

Bubbies loves to play in the sprinkler!

Mildew, Mildew, On The Wall…

If you live in the south, coastal south at that, you know what I am talking about. Green mildew grows oh so lovely on any wall not in the blaring sun.  So once a year it seems I need to get out and kill-scrub it away.  Check out the nastiness…

This also grows on the windows and siding. So I had a lot to do, and a short time to do it. (baby nap)

Its not an easy job. It would be, if I had a pressure washer. But luckily I have my own pressure washers…

Oh yeah, tickets to the gun show!

Ok, Stop laughing. Aside from killer guns, you will need a few things to get this green mess up.

1. Scrubber – I used a push broom.

2. Bleach.

3. Dawn Dish Soap.

4. Bucket.

5. Hose

Mix it how you want, I eyeball it, so I cant give you specs.

Basically, you will want to work in sections, start from the top and work your way down. I did about 10 foot sections because it wanted to dry  fast in today’s heat.  Lots of scrubbing, and sweating later, looks fresh and new! I had to scrub the windows and the patio too, it was growing all over it.

Rinse the sections as you finish them, and then give it all one big rinse when you are done scrubbing to make sure you get it all off.

Looks fresh and white now!

Ta da!

Now for some lemonade on the porch. Yeah right!
